Under the Sea Birthday Cake

The Story behind this Cake
I remember it was a cold and rainy sunday. I was in the mood for baking some cake. So i did it. I baked 7" vanilla sponges and filled it with vanilla buttercream. After ganaching using the 'upside down' method of McGreevy Cakes the cake was ready to be covered and decorated. But I didn't have any idea. So I asked my four kids to give me some idea. They proposed to me a 'Finding Nemo' themed cake.
I was looking for inspirations on internet. After 2 hours of covering and decorating the cake I was really proud of my work. I called the kids to show them my creation. My littlest boy (at that time 3 years old) said to me "Mom, your cake is not finished yet!" - I asked "Why?" - So he replied "Well, there's no Nemo!!" LOL!!! Well, he was right! But at that time I was in the beginning of my cakey journey and my skill was on a very low level. I was not able to make a clown fish. I'm a hobby and self-thaught caker decorator and have still to learn a lot!! All decorations were free handmade from fondant, no molds. I used some basic fondant modelling tools and small round plunger cutters to create water bubbles. I didn't have an extruder or a grass tip for the small plants looked like grass so I used an sieve. Easy and simple. I'm sure that every household has a sieve in the kitchen.... I have had lots of fun to make this cake and I have learned a lot! It was my first and only 'Under the Sea' cake to date. Hope you like it. Share a cake by Sweet Side of Cakes |
