Magical 3D Unicorn Birthday Cake |
The Story behind this Cake
This cake is one of my all time favourites!
I had 6 days notice to produce this majestic creature and some how I pulled it off! First thought - where do I begin??? So I scrolled through many Google images of similar cakes and just thought 'let's see what happens' haha! I made sure I had plenty of supplies which included RKT (Rice Krispy Treats), flower modelling paste - must! And enough ingredients to bake plenty of cake incase anything goes wrong. So I set off by baking 2 vanilla sheet cakes of 10" x 12", these were 2" deep. I then shaped the head and neck out of RKT and covered in fondant, made a spiralled horn and 2 ears using 100% flowere paste, left aside to harden. Next was the dreaded carving eeeek! Filled the moist vanilla sponges with smooth vanilla buttercream and raspberry jam. Carved the body shape not forgetting the chest, waist or rump and I managed to carve part of the legs. To extend the legs and give a 'laying down' shape I filled in with RKT. ``Crumb coated the headless Unicorn and fridged for 20 minutes to harden. Next up was attaching the previous shaped neck and head. I used 2 long plastic rods and the help of royal icing. Then covered the whole cake with white fondant and blended the neck to the body with the leaf shaping tool. Next I added the ears, blended with fondant again and added the horn with a long skewer. All that's left was the mane, tail and colourful wings! I curled individual hairs with my hands - not gonna lie took agggges! And I used a leaf cutter for the 'feathers' of the wings. I then used pink to airspray some details and give the body some depth. Painted gold on hoofs and horn. Covered the board and finally sprayed hair and wings with shimmer spray to really make her magical! Thank you for taking time to read how I made this beauty.
