The Story behind this Cake
This was my first sculpted cake and seemed like a very daunting task, but ended up being a pretty easy cake design.
A customer sent me a picture of his wife's favorite Coach purse and asked me to make a cake version as a surprise for her 29th birthday party. She did not know that there would be a surprise party held at her house after she returned from her birthday outings with family and friends early in the day. Her husband called me during the party and told me that she loved the cake and was very pleasantly surprised with the realistic look! The cake itself was a moist strawberry cake with real strawberries and strawberry cream cheese filling. The entire cake was then covered in vanilla swiss buttercream frosting. The cake was then layered and sculpted into a purse shape and carefully covered in fondant. The sides are edible icing sheets copied from an online Coach graphic. These sheets were placed on both sides over the fondant and secured. A little bit about using edible sheets: I printed out the coach pattern in color on computer paper and took it into Walmart since they have edible icing sheets available. Edible paper image sheets are sold for $5/sheet. 2 sheets were required to wrap both sides of the cake. They have a sticky side and are just cut as needed and pressed on the fondant. Attached is the graphic I found on the internet to print the sheets! The "leather" trim was created out of fondant with a stitched effect using a tool. All "buckles" and "hardware" were made from fondant that was painted with luster dust. The handle was created from gumpaste. The coach "tag" was cut from fondant, stitched, and placed...the silver "beads" were strategically placed using dragees to imitate a ball chain. I used a large daisy plunger cutter to make the daisy. No molds were used to create the accessories. The camera is a rice krispy treat covered with fondant and decorated/painted and the compact was made entirely from gumpaste that was luster dusted as well. Share a cake by Sweet Celebrations, LLC |
