3d Rainbow Sponge Minion Birthday Cakes

The Story behind this Cake
I was asked to make this cake for one of my customers, her young son is mad for Minions and in truth so am I. I suggested making him into a rainbow sponge as who doesn't like a rainbow right? I had to start making the individual layers of the cake. I used a 6" round tin (I have two to speed up the process). I made up a normal vanilla sponge mix using a two egg recipe then added the colour using gel colours. I baked the head part of the cake In a half domed cake tin which is roughly 6" across so the same width as the 'body'. Instead of lining the tin with with baking paper I spread a thin layer of butter all around the inside of the tin and then dusted flour over the top of the butter to make sure the cake wouldn't stick to the cake tin. The customer had asked for the cake to be filled with just jam and so each layer has a layer of strawberry jam with no buttercream. Once I had stacked the cakes I put dowels through the middle of the cake just to give the cake more stability when traveling. Each layer was approximately 1.5"-2" high so the cake stood at 12". I then covered the whole cake in a layer of strawberry jam and covered with fondant.
Then to cover him in fondant! Grease your work surface with Trex and knead the fondant then roll out. I make sure the fondant is roughly 5mm thick. I cover him in one go as this is what works for me but others do the side then the top. Then I roll out the blue icing measuring how far you would like the trousers to go up the cake. This is also perfect for covering up any little cracks or imperfections. Then its just a case of adding this arms legs and eye/s. The arms and legs were modeled from fondant. Each Minion I make gets a name this one is Stuart :) Share a cake by Becci's Tasty Treats |
