Lace Handbag Birthday Cake
|
The Story behind this Cake
This cake was made for my sister's birthday. I wanted to experiment with lace and do something a little different. I'm not sure how I thought of a bag now but am pleased that I did. It lent itself perfectly for the contents (i.e. purse and handkerchief) and then for the bag decoration and base.My sister has sent a picture of her cake to a friend who later asked her why she had sent her a picture of a handbag - the friend thought it was real. Praise indeed!!
The lace was made using Claire Bowman lace mix. It was spread in the moulds and baked for 20 mins, allowed to cool then carefully extracted from the mats. I then sprayed the handbag lace with black aerosol colour and the lace covering the board with pearl spray. The handbag clasp was a button mould, the mirror part of the hand mirror was a brooch mould, the purse was hand modelled and painted with lace overlay, the handkerchief was a piece of square flower paste folded into a hankie shape and edged with lace, the lipstick was also hand modelled and painted. The cake was a vanilla sponge filled with jam and buttercream. The paste was handmade as is all my cake coverings. I do not use shop bought paste except for flower paste which I use for flowers etc. Share a cake by Sugarpaste Dreams |
