Surprise Handbag Birthday Cake |
The Story behind this Cake
Surprise!!!!!! Which is exactly what happened when I delivered the cake to my sisters belated surprise party. She has always been there for me and every year for her birthday I try to make something extra nice. Especially this year since I had to miss my sisters real birthday due to other cake obligations.
So I thought??.... Why not try to make a replica of her favorite handbag plus her little shoe trinket!!!! Many hours and experiments later I think I managed to get the look just right! For this project I have used many materials that were very foreign to me but now that I have tried them, I can't live without them. The cake itself was a six layer Neapolitan, two layers of chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream, Vanilla bean cake with vanilla bean buttercream and lastly strawberry cake with strawberry buttercream. The handles were made from a 50/50 mix of gumpaste and fondant with a hidden wire to support them. My sisters shoe was a whole other ballpark!!! I tried many methods but did not get the results I wanted. So I made my own mold using a basic recipe of salt, water and cornstarch. For the shoe key chain I used Satin Ice gumpaste in white, once they were dry, I used vodka and Gold Highlighter, Silver and pink dust for details. I also used Craftsy online class "Designer Handbag Cakes by Elisa Strauss" Worth every penny!!! Materials:
