The Story behind this Cake
This Frozen themed cake was one of my first orders, as well as my first Frozen themed cake. The birthday girl was a fan of Elsa and sparkles, the only two requirements I was given when the cake was ordered.
The original idea for the cake came from Pinterest. 1. The cake was a rainbow mudcake (a plain white chocolate mud cake with gel colours) filled with lemon meringue buttercream, so I didn't have to worry about getting an extra layer of cake (or two) to get that nice height for the cake. 2. Seeing as the Elsa topper was one of my first toppers,I didn't use Tylose, which proved to be a huge disadvantage, as the figurine took a week to dry. To make Elsa,I followed the tutorial by Francesca SugarArt on Youtube. To get the perfect snowflakes for the cake and cupcakes, I had to roll fondant out, about 5mm thick, dust the top abundantly with icing sugar and then cut it with snowflake cutters. Before they dried,I inserted wires in few of them to later stick them into the cake. 3. For the cake, I iced it with buttercream, let it chill overnight and covered it in light blue fondant. Now, because the top part of the cake will be covered with another layer of white fondant, it doesn't really matter if the edges crack or have elephant skin. If this does happen,smooth it out carefully so there are no dents or such once the white fondant is on top. 4. For the white layer of fondant, I measured the diameter of the cake surface and added about 4 cm to each side,s o that it drapes slightly. Once I cut a clean circle of fondant,I started cutting off the excess of fondant to make the "drapes". Once it's all cut, I transferred it to the cake, with a slightly wet surface,so it sticks, made sure it's "draped" evenly on all sides and smoothed it out with smoothers. 5. The name plaque I had to make in advance too, for it to dry. I cut a shape for the plaque out of paper, put it on top of the rolled, white fondant,and cut it in the shape of the paper. I turned the ends of the name plaque over pieces of tissues and let it dry. Once it was dry, I wrote the birthday girl's name on it. To stick it to the cake, I used royal icing. 6. To make the cupcake toppers,I cut out freehand shapes of a crown, laid Americolour color gel tubes horizontally, put pieces of baking paper on top and places the crowns on them. Baking paper was to make sure they came off the tubes later. Another topper was the Queen from the Snowhite cutter set. I made it out fondant, let it dry and dusted all the toppers with edible silver and blue glitter.
