Hand Painted Dutch Birthday Cake

The Story behind this Cake
Over the last couple years I have gained the confidence to go outside my comfort zone and try new things, such as painting on fondant. I still cannot believe I took hours to prepare this rather large cake and then took a paint brush and started painting on it. Keeping in mind I am not an artist, in fact far from it. Many would say I am a stick people kind of artist, including myself, but I did it and I love the results.
This cake was a labor of love for a dear friend and has so many elements that were made especially for her from the table cloth cake board to the top flower bud. When I was much younger she brought me back a red table cloth from Holland as a gift and I still have it to this day, the cake board was made to match that cloth. When I think of her I think of all things Dutch and I wanted to create a cake that represented those feelings so I created a Delft vase. As a child when I went to her house I would play with a very special wind-up Dutch windmill and thinking of it always brings a smile to my face. I couldn't create this cake without a windmill, in fact I added two because she is extra special. One of her favorite flowers is the hibiscus, but she is sad because they only bloom for a day and I wanted her to be able to enjoy them all the time. To be honest, I haven't created many flowers and my wiring success has been very poor. So I created the flowers hoping I could wire them, but leaving room on the cake board to display them if I wasn't successful. Painting and wiring in one day was amazing *big smile*. I can't say enough about how personal this cake was, every brush stroke was added with love, admiration, and respect for a woman who was like a mother to me. Thank you so much for letting me share!
